Jewish Federation Of Metropolitan Chicago - Executive Vice President & CfoBoard Member And Consultant Jan 1980 - Nov 2015KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS ♦ ENDOWMENT. Upon his arrival, the organization’s Endowment stood at $39M. Michael drafted the blueprint for an endowment effort with the goal of increasing the fund to $100M in 10 years, and then realized that goal in only six years. Under his financial leadership, the Federation consistently hit endowment targets, eventually growing to in excess of $1B. During his tenure he took the endowment function from one part-time employee to a staff of 22. He provided vigilant stewardship of the fund’s assets, achieving consistently high rates of return on the Endowment investment portfolio.. ♦ REAL ESTATE. In 1985, Michael created the Jewish Federation Facilities Corporation (FacCorp) to acquire, build, own, manage, and operate real estate. Today, FacCorp maintains 2 million square feet, encompassing schools, camps, day care centers, community centers, Hillels on college campuses, residential facilities (for both youth and the elderly) and office buildings. His efforts resulted in significant annual savings.♦ FINANCING. Michael created and implemented a system that enabled Federation to finance more than 20 buildings in excess of $200 M for its initiatives through tax-exempt bonds, while funds raised to support services were invested in an endowment. This model has been adopted by numerous other charitable organizations. ♦ NATIONAL SCOPE: JEWISH FEDERATIONS OF NORTH AMERICA (JFNA). In addition to his responsibilities at Federation, he has been a leader with JFNA. He helped found 2 nationwide programs that serve all federations and all their affiliate and beneficiary agencies: 1) JFBP -- the Jewish Federation Bond Program, which provides tax-exempt bond underwriting services, and 2) JFIP – the Jewish Federation Investment Program, which provides endowment portfolio and investment management services.
