About Michael W Taylor

I passionately believe in working with people and value the importance of developing their skills as a key economic driver for business. My career began in a small town on the Fylde Coast called Kirkham working at Bensons Bakery before School aged 15. I left School in 1985 and trained as a baker undertaking City and Guilds qualification in bakery and confectionery at Blackpool and Fylde College. (Student of the Year 1986)Purchased Bensons Bakery (est 1927) in 1991 for £100,000 at the age of 22 without any family assistance. I operated this business as a sole Proprietor for 12 years increasing the turnover significantly until selling out to a Blackpool based food group in 2003. I have faced the challenges and enjoyed the successes of being in business, and have brought that experience to all of my roles.Re-appointed Governor Barnsley College November 2012 (Chairman of the Audit Committee)Regional Apprenticeship Ambassador for the National Apprenticeship Service and supported John Denham MP on his Business and Enterprise Review Group.A fully qualified baker with a Masters Degree in Food Safety Management. A Fellow of the IOD with a Diploma in company direction.Previously the Operations Director of Fosters Bakery,Chairman of CenFRA a project funded by the Regional Development Agency Yorkshire Forward, Governor of Barnsley College from 2008-2010. (Chair of Audit Committee 2009-2010) Non Exec Barnsley NHS,Sheffield NHS and a board Member Leeds City Region LEP Employment and Skills board. Joined the National Skills Academy for Food and Drink in January 2013. Appointed Head of Business Development in July 2014. Member of a DTI Mission Team of seven who visited China in 2006 to research the functionality of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Food. Supervised two Knowledge Partnerships with Sheffield Hallam University. IOD Young Director of the Year 2008
