Power Supply Design & Validation Engineer
Key Responsibilities• Design and validation of quasi-resonant switch mode flyback power supplies optimized for both low and high power operation within a single controller IC.• Designed and implemented both lab and production line automated test equipment, test fixtures, test programs, data collection and analysis.• Assisted with EMC and acoustic design issues and their mitigation.• Key individual ensuring compliance with USB-C and USB-PD functional, behavioral and electrical requirements.• Frequently traveled to vendors and contract manufacturer in China to support prototype builds and solve production related issues.
Sustaining And Lab Automation Manager
Key Responsibilities• Coordinated with Design and Production teams to validate new IC designs in customer application-like hardware.• Managed lab ATE (automated test equipment), test fixtures, test programs, data collection and analysis.• Advised and consulted with VIP customers to solve design, performance and manufacturability problems with both new and existing power supply designs.• Coordinated product validation and evaluation schedules with Design, Applications, Production and Marketing teams to ensure resources were available for upcoming product releases.• Occasional guest appearances in marketing and training videos.
Power Supply Applications Engineer
Key Responsibilities:• New product design verification, troubleshooting and introduction.• Semiconductor fab facility evaluations and process transfer evaluations.• Regulatory agency pre-approval testing for EMC (Conducted and Radiated Emissions), line transient immunity, efficiency, leakage current and acoustics. • Design and managed automated test platforms (Test hardware, fixtures, harnesses, data collection and analysis) for many power supplies including battery chargers, LED drivers, PFC products and resonant converters.• Directly supported customers, sales, marketing and field application engineers with design, testing and failure analysis.Notable Projects:• Performed the final testing required to migrate two product lines to a new semiconductor process. Minimized project bottlenecks by coordinating efforts with Design and Production. The product migrations was initially scheduled for two years and had three engineers allocated as resources. I completed the entire product migration by myself in one year through heavy use of test automation. Successful completion of this project significantly increased die yield and product profit margins.• Demonstrated, through research and testing, that a newly designed product exceeded the performance of similar electronic components already receiving safety approval and that our product continued to meet safety requirements even during device failure. Documentation of my research, testing and results were distributed to global safety and regulatory agencies. All initial objections for this product were rescinded. • Advised Design, Production and Senior Project Managers on changes to their automated test methods used during new product development. Demonstrated a 30% reduction in measurement variability by making small but critical changes to their automated test equipment and programs. Identified previously unknown factors that were causing decreased product performance in key performance areas.
R&D Power Supply Engineer
• Assisted in the design, testing and certification of extremely low-noise multiple-output power supplies ranging from 100W to 850W.• Scope of work included design validation at the schematic, PCB layout, thermal, electrical, mechanical and level.• Performed evaluations and validation of EMC compliance (conducted/radiated emissions), power line transient immunity, leakage current and acoustic performance.• Quickly addressed production, manufacturing and quality related problems.• Supported internal engineering groups to solve power supply end-use related problems.• Quickly identified the source of a power supply defect that was causing $1.5M per day in lost sales due to manufacturing production line stoppages.• Worked with production engineers to increase product quality and drive company product failure rates to industry leading levels.• Collaborated with cross functional teams to find opportunities for improvement in existing production designs.
