About Michael Vande Vrede

Making science faster. This is the principle that has guided my career for the better part of the past decade. I’m passionate about solving usability problems in science and working to help advance scientific research and discovery. At EMD Digital, a newly established division of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt Germany, I currently lead our Digital Product organization which spans our product lifecycle, including: product discovery, product management, engineering, marketing and branding & communications. During my time at Merck, I have founded a number of new digital products and businesses, such as Syntropy (www.Syntropy.com), a planned Joint Venture focused on data integration for large health institutions, and new digital lab management platform called BrightLabs www.BrightLabs.com within Merck KGaA’s Life Science division. My previous company, Sigma-Aldrich, was acquired in 2015 by Merck and I was fortunate to be able to play an instrumental role in the formation of the combined Life Science leader, building on the deep expertise and success in digital that we developed within Sigma-Aldrich. Being a bit of a digital maverick, I have led a variety of change initiatives within Sigma-Aldrich to make the transition from an 80-year-old chemical company with a website to having the leading eCommerce site in the industry. I’m truly passionate about what I do and I’m always interested in connecting with creative folk or like-minded digital entrepreneurs, so feel free to contact me if you would like to connect.
