About Michael Marcotte

Mike entered his media career through the studio doors of WUOG-FM at the University of Georgia. The Athens music scene notwithstanding, he pivoted from DJ to radio dramatist to news reporter. With two degrees in journalism, he waded into public broadcasting as NPR was coming of age. Mike reported for WOSU AM-FM-TV in Columbus. In 1987, he was made News Director at KPLU FM in Tacoma-Seattle. Eight years later took the news manager job at KPBS FM-TV in San Diego. After 25 years in those roles, Mike set up his own consulting business, MVM Consulting. A Stanford Knight Fellowship in 2010-2011 opened a new door, into the teaching profession. Mike was named the 2012-2013 Donald W. Reynolds Chair for the Ethics of Entrepreneurial and Innovative Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno. Now Mike is the first Professor of Practice in Journalism at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Mike remains a public media news consultant. He was recently hired as Local News Consultant for Democracy Fund. Other recent clients include Indiana Public Media, Corporation for Public Broadcasting, KERA, P.M. Integrity Project, KQED, Capital Public Radio, Iowa Public Radio and NPR. Mike has published numerous articles on issues in local NPR newsrooms and shares his work via several websites, http://www.mikemarcotte.com, http://localnpr.org, and http://prndg.org.
