I have recently completed a Ph.D. at University College Cork, Ireland titled “The Impact of Afforestation on the Carbon Stocks of Irish Soils”. This Ph.D. involved the identification, sampling and analysis of the soils of a large number of forest and non-forest sites across the Republic of Ireland. The analysis allowed us to determine the effect of afforestation on soil carbon stocks in Ireland and resulted in publication of two papers in international peer-reviewed journals. Through the Ph.D. I developed strong organizational and analytical skills, which were critical to finishing the project on time and within budgetary constraints. In addition, I have a thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office as well as experience in statistical, mapping and programming software. I have excellent written and oral skills as evidenced by the authorship of two papers in peer-reviewed international journals and the presentations I gave at international conferences. Successfully completing a Ph.D. requires you to be a self-motivated, independent, quick learner that is able to problem solve and trouble shoot the inevitable challenges and issues that arise when conducting field and analytical work. However, you must also be flexible and able to work closely and collaboratively with other professionals. My short term career goal is to obtain a position as an environmental scientist at an environmental consulting firm. I am interested in all aspects of environmental science, but would especially like to work on projects that involve soil and groundwater sampling.
