Profile bio

About Michael Wineman

I have always been drawn towards analytical subjects throughout my life, particularly mathematics. Whether I was wrapping my mind around new subjects like algebra and calculus or program solver functions on my TI-83, I enjoyed the journey of tackling and resolving problems that I encountered. However, I also knew that I would not be satisfied unlocking mathematical truths for their own sake. I needed application. After taking my first physics class at St. Olaf, I knew I had found that outlet. A passion of understanding physical laws quickly complemented my fascination with math. And yet, after my internship at UIUC, even physics was too theoretical for my tastes. I looked to mechanical engineering as a way to further apply the physical knowledge I had gained and the programming skills I had developed. My journey proved to be successful in graduate school. My work with prototyping a geared wheelchair has been greatly rewarding. From code writing and theoretical modeling to mechatronic integration and experimental design, all of which should culminate in a physical product that could improve the quality of life of millions of others, I could not have asked for a better masters thesis project.Moving forward into industry, I hope to showcase and apply my engineering knowledge and coding skills. I see myself in a position where I can display my knowledge of mechanical and electrical engineering, whether that involves CAD work, sensor integration, control theory, or more. I hope to eventually enter a leadership development program to help myself and others achieve success with what we accomplish.

Listed skills include C++, Ni Labview, Solidworks, Microsoft Office, and 5 others.

Graduate Research Assistant

Current

I am working with IntelliWheels, a Champaign-based wheelchair company, to develop a second-generation prototype of an automatic gear-shifting (AGS) wheelchair. My primary task is to design and interface the sensors, wireless ICs and actuators to determine and shift into the correct gear. In addition, I am designing a test fixture that will perform a simulated lifetime test on the AGS gearbox. Finally, I am conducting a study to determine if the AGS system reduces the torque that users exert on their handrims during wheelchair locomotion.

Jan 2012 - Present

Teaching Assistant

Urbana-Champaign, Illinois Area

I conducted discussion sections where students could see problems solved on the blackboard and ask questions on course material. I also graded unit exams and held office hours where students could ask further questions on homework problems. I taught statics during Fall 2011 and Fall 2012, and introductory dynamics during Spring 2012.In Summer 2012, I instructed introductory dynamics over eight weeks. In addition to the responsibilities mentioned above, I designed my own schedule, homework sets and exams; prepared and presented lectures; and graded homework assignments in addition to unit exams.

Sep 2011 - Dec 2012

Contractor

South Windsor, Ct

I updated and documented an Excel-based model that predicts the lifetime of UTC Power's phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) power plant. These updates involved looking through updated fuel cell part drawings, contacting other employees regarding updated model outputs and debugging the model.I also developed a testing schedule for and analyzed data from a test that measured acid transfer rate across separator plates used in the PAFC. As part of this, I developed a VisualBasic macro in Excel that would automatically analyze the data and roughly determine the quality of a given trial.

Jun 2010 - Aug 2010

Undergraduate Intern

Urbana-Champaign, Illinois Area

I prepared samples with various microscopic surface geometries for wetting tests. My biggest contribution involved the design of a rotary stage into which a laser alignment module and our samples could be placed. My second task was to assist with developing a methodology for creating the microscopic surfaces without them cracking using small-scale 3D printing methods.

Jun 2009 - Aug 2009

Undergraduate Intern

Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul Area

I helped to develop a tight-binding model for Pt3Co, a catalyst used in hydrogen fuel cells. As part of this, I used modeling software to relax different configurations of Pt3Co nanoparticles to their lowest-energy state. The goal was to eventually use this model to see if there is any connection between the magnetic properties and catalytic effectiveness of Pt3Co.
