Michael is Engineering Director in Apple’s AIML organization, leading the team responsible for search platform and foundation model platform powering Siri, Safari, Apple Music, App Store and other Apple products, working together with research and product teams to rebuild search with AI.Prior to Apple, Michael was Senior Director of Engineering at Google, responsible for the data indexing and semantic understanding platforms from Google's Core organization. The platforms he was responsible for power Search, Lens, Ads, Shopping, YouTube, Photos, Play, Vertex AI and other business critical Google products. He led the team and built Generative AI capabilities in the platforms to serve LLMs and other GenAI models and empower product innovation with the latest AI/ML technologies at scale. It contributed to many of the Generative AI efforts announced in Google IO'23 and launched in 2023 (including Google Photos Magic Editor, Google Lens in Bard, Generative AI Wallpaper, Image Generation in Search, etc). Before joining Core, he worked on Search Infrastructure and was responsible for Google's web indexing system powering Web Search and other Search products. He led the team and built the new web indexing system that replaced its predecessor (externally known as Caffeine), built web page rendering in the web indexing system and made Googlebot evergreen with the latest Chromium, built the crawling and indexing system for Google's App Indexing, successfully launched for Android apps.Michael has led various distributed engineering and cross-functional teams, drove cross-org collaboration and complex projects, and served as the engineering leader responsible for the deployment of web-scale distributed systems and data/search infrastructure that enables cutting-edge AI/ML technologies. It’s always been Michael's passion to build cutting edge technology to enhance products for end users.
