About Mike Yim

Mike brings 20+ years of experience and insight working within the evolving energy industry. Key areas of expertise include:• Flexible and Controllable Load Resource (CLR) Technologies• Energy Orchestration Across Diverse Control Platforms• Utility Resource Portfolio Optimization & Data Intelligence• Department of Energy's (DOE) Advanced Clean Energy Community Collaborative (AC3)• Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Abatement Strategies / Sustainability Planning• California's Air Resource Board (CARB) GHG Verification Accreditation• Demand Side Management (DSM) Program Design, Implementation, and Evaluation • Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) and Innovative Technology Financing • Distributed Generation (DG) and Distributed Energy Resource (DER) Grid Deployment Strategies• Beneficial Electrification and Smart City Collaboratives• Valuation of Economic, Environmental, and Societal Value of Water (and Other Resources)• Characterization and Valuation of Non-Energy Benefits (NEBs) for Resource Cost TestingMike continues to navigate the complex relationships between energy economics, resource valuation and conservation mandates, geopolitical partnerships / adversarial relationships, and broader sustainability legislation initiatives spanning all market sectors. He has leveraged this cross-cutting experience to develop pragmatic and cost-effective deployment strategies for innovative technologies.More recently, Mike has optimized the deployment and control of advanced DERs through the DOE's Advanced Connected Community Collaborative (AC3). A core component of this project involvedcoordinating real-time performance data and grid controllability across a diverse portfolio of technologies, customer devices, generating assets, CLRs, etc. maintained by our utility partners. Business learnings and benefits from this initiative will scale more broadly to other communities with differing technology ecosystems. Mike holds a Master's Degree (M.S.) in Industrial Engineering (IE) and Supply Chain Management (SCM) from Purdue University. Mike also holds a Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR) from the University of California at Berkeley.

    • Collaborating with the IBACOS team to develop our Advanced Clean Communities Collaborative (AC3) framework. The AC3 framework has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to advance its “Connected Communities” initiative, the goal of which is to deploy new technology to transform thousands of homes and workplaces into state-of-the-art, grid-connected, energy-efficient buildings. At scale, these connected communities will directly contribute towards a net-zero carbon economy and provide a model for reducing the building sector’s emissions profile. The AC3 team comprises a diverse group of accomplished organizations; leaders in the utility, housing construction / retrofit, and renewable energy industries.• Designing and modeling the applications for Controllable Load Resources (CLRs) and Virtual Power Plant (VPP) platforms for Duke Energy to reliably curtail load. The team is developing representative market scenarios to forecast technology potential and characterizing other beneficial grid applications, including improved reliability / resiliency, locational value, methane flaring alternatives, etc. In partnership with Advanced Energy, the study will also inform DR test protocols for a 64 kW flexible computing facility installed at Duke’s microgrid test center. The control standards will include OpenADR, IEEE 2030.5, IEC 61968-5, and will feature a secure, two-way communications framework. Test outputs will inform the design of a CLR tariff providing controllable load to utilities in response to grid management needs.• Developing Advanced Energy Communities (AEC) in partnership with Energize Fresno and the California Energy Commission (CEC). Tierra has completed comprehensive Distributed Energy Resource (DER) deployment strategies for 16 projects in Fresno, California, all of which have been approved and are slated for construction. Tierra continues to provide Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) support as needed.
  • Guidehouse
    Associate Director
    Guidehouse Jan 2010 - Jul 2013
    Mclean, Virginia, Us
    • Led the development and implementation of a large mid-western Investor-Owned Utility's (IOU) Strategic Energy Plan. Key responsibilities included the ongoing review of regulatory filings, regulatory testimony support, procuring regulatory approval, and the development of an integrated EM&V framework capable of importing / exporting real-time data into new Information Technology (IT) infrastructure and data security investments.• Led the Impact, Process, and Market evaluation of an Energy Partnership Program between the Universities of California (UC) / California State Universities (CSU) and Investor Owned Utilities (IOU). The Partnership promoted custom efficiency retrofits, Retro-Commissioning (RCx), and education / awareness training. Key responsibilities included the development of a statistically representative evaluation sample, specification of rigorous Measurement & Verification (M&V) protocols, and regulatory reporting compliance.
  • Blue Summit Consulting Group, Llc
    Consultant
Blue Summit Consulting Group, Llc Aug 2005 - Dec 2009
    Evans, Georgia, Us
    • Led the 2006 – 2008 California Database for Energy Efficient Resources (DEER) Cost Update Study. The pricing and market characterization of over 250 separate residential, commercial, and industrial energy conservation applications in the DEER database are nationally recognized as DSM program design inputs. In addition to developing and analyzing hedonic pricing models, the study established an interactive web-enabled database that provided a central repository for costs collected through various resources.• Oversaw the design and implementation of two low income programs successfully implemented in Sierra Nevada. This project involved research into program demographics, calibrated building energy simulation modeling for interactive weatherization measures, and the development of detailed engineering algorithms for non-interactive measures. A key task for this project was the recommendation of additional cost-effective measures for inclusion in future program cycles.
  • The Purdue Energy Modeling Research Group
    Research Analyst
The Purdue Energy Modeling Research Group Aug 2004 - Jul 2005
    • Updated and analyzed the Indiana Natural Gas Distribution Optimization Model. This model assessed the economic and physical congestion risk stemming from variations in system wide demand and supply characteristics.• Published and presented the 2005 Renewable Energy Resources Study for submission to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. This study tracked market trends and potential for renewable energy technologies deployed in Indiana.
