Mike also holds a Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR) from the University of California at Berkeley.

The AC3 framework has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to advance its “Connected Communities” initiative, the goal of which is to deploy new technology to transform thousands of homes and workplaces into state-of-the-art, grid-connected, energy-efficient buildings. At scale, these connected communities will directly contribute towards a net-zero carbon economy and provide a model for reducing the building sector’s emissions profile. The AC3 team comprises a diverse group of accomplished organizations; leaders in the utility, housing construction / retrofit, and renewable energy industries.• Designing and modeling the applications for Controllable Load Resources (CLRs) and Virtual Power Plant (VPP) platforms for Duke Energy to reliably curtail load. The team is developing representative market scenarios to forecast technology potential and characterizing other beneficial grid applications, including improved reliability / resiliency, locational value, methane flaring alternatives, etc. In partnership with Advanced Energy, the study will also inform DR test protocols for a 64 kW flexible computing facility installed at Duke’s microgrid test center. The control standards will include OpenADR, IEEE 2030.5, IEC 61968-5, and will feature a secure, two-way communications framework. Test outputs will inform the design of a CLR tariff providing controllable load to utilities in response to grid management needs.• Developing Advanced Energy Communities (AEC) in partnership with Energize Fresno and the California Energy Commission (CEC). Tierra has completed comprehensive Distributed Energy Resource (DER) deployment strategies for 16 projects in Fresno, California, all of which have been approved and are slated for construction. Tierra continues to provide Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) support as needed.

The Partnership promoted custom efficiency retrofits, Retro-Commissioning (RCx), and education / awareness training. The pricing and market characterization of over 250 separate residential, commercial, and industrial energy conservation applications in the DEER database are nationally recognized as DSM program design inputs. In addition to developing and analyzing hedonic pricing models, the study established an interactive web-enabled database that provided a central repository for costs collected through various resources.• Oversaw the design and implementation of two low income programs successfully implemented in Sierra Nevada. This project involved research into program demographics, calibrated building energy simulation modeling for interactive weatherization measures, and the development of detailed engineering algorithms for non-interactive measures. A key task for this project was the recommendation of additional cost-effective measures for inclusion in future program cycles. -
