My business partner and I opened an online automotive aftermarket shop dedicated to customer service and promoting local events. Our first strategic stride was to sponsor a local car club (30+ cars) and have a presence in Portland's biggest automotive show at PIR (Portland International Raceway). We instantly had a reliable and enthusiastic customer base. We had a unique Facebook, Twitter and MySpace presence which allowed us to have real-time relationships with our customers and establish trust. Despite our best efforts, we were not positioned well enough to compete against other 'well established' shops in the Portland area when the economy went belly-up.
