The subject on which we worked was "Attenuation correction based on equivalent matrix fitting in low-level gamma-ray spectrometry". Gamma-ray spectrometry analysis of samples requires efficiency calibrations made for the counting vial and an energy range that span the energies of the gamma-rays to be analysed. Commonly, reference calibrations are set up but corrections need to be applied to account for changes in density and matrix composition, filling height… Generally, when the gamma-ray energies are relatively high, the effect of the matrix composition is negligible whereas at low gamma-rays energies (below 100keV), the specific matrix composition starts to play a non-negligible role and this effect is even higher at very low energies (below 60keV). Consequently, in order to make unbiased low-energy gamma-ray analysis, the matrix composition needs to be known and as a consequence, a method is required to characterize the matrix.A method to characterize the matrix is to use gamma-ray transmission measurements. Measuring the gamma-ray transmissions at different energies allows us to quantify the gamma attenuation in a particular matrix. Then, using fitting methods, it is possible to find a combination of elemental attenuation coefficients that represent an equivalent matrix in the selected energy window. It is sufficient to know an equivalent matrix (such a matrix with similar attenuation properties as the real one) to correct gamma-ray analysis for matrix composition. Hence, there is no real need to know the actual elemental composition.We developed a fitting method and tested it on experimental data. The influence of different experimental parameters was investigated and uncertainty on attenuation data and on detection efficiency was determined.
