My wife and I bought a 4 hectares quinta (wine farm) in Castelo de Paiva (Portugal), in the heart of the Douro valley, 50 kms south-east from Porto. Its name, Quinta do Mirante, can be translated as “quinta of the view point”. Located on the top of a hill, embracing the valley from its rocky belvedere, mingling woods & green areas on four hectares ground, growing many fruit trees on numerous terraces, the quinta is a dedicated playground for hosting, retreats, workshops, team building activities & culturel events. KAANI, or “Spice” in Wolof, is an initiative set out to give voice to the disinherited generation of young creative people from the poverty-stricken outskirts of European and West-African cities. And therewith prevent radicalisation and illegal migration.Our purpose is to take young talent, educate them and create things together, have them return home with a newfound awareness and the tools and network to enrich their own home culture.In so doing, have them spread the word to others and give them a reason to stay put and transform their adversity into positive action. Invigorating young people’s anchorage to their local heritage stimulates pride and self-awareness.
