SIF S.A. is the Forest Advisor to the Forest Investment Fund Lignum. The fund raised US$40 million fund in April, 2006 with capital from local and international investors to acquire forest assets in Chile.
General Manager
SIF created a new mechanism to promote afforestation in Regions VII and VIII of Chile and generate a new financial instrument for the Forestry Sector. In November 2002 SIF sold the first forest asset backed security to be placed in Chile’s capital markets and the first worldwide to plant forests on marginal lands owned by small and medium farmers. Acquired land use rights to young forests whose future harvests provided the source of repayment to the bond holders, and established Pine and Eucalyptus plantations on 3,100 hectares of bare land. Formalized the acquisition rights to these assets through the use of cost-free options.Designed a model for sustainable development whereby land use contracts function as lease arrangements and the owners retain possession of their property. An annual fee is paid for each hectare planted and a percentage of the net harvest proceeds. The project was viewed by the local press and the Chilean government as a model for poverty reversal and has been copied broadly in the forestry sector.Negotiated long term commitments from two of the three major Chilean forestry companies to provide administrative and planting services to SIF, and grant important volume and commercialization guarantees to the bond holders.Achieved AA- and A+ ratings. Investors included the local pension funds, banks, insurance companies, mutual funds and private investors.Managed all facets of design, organization and sale of the bond instrument with a small team of 3 full time employees and more than 20 subcontracted service companies. Obtained approval from USIJI (“U.S. Initiatives Jointly Implemented”) for carbon credits under the Kyoto Protocol for Climate Change. Managed SIF until it was sold in 2009 for US$8.5 million, achieving a 25% compounded return on investment over a 10 year period.
