About Michele Stine
When was the last time you went through your day and NOT interact with media or stories?Binge watch a Netflix show?Gobble up a new album drop?Devour a novel or biography?As a theatre practitioner and arts educator, I spend between 30 to 50 hours a week with stories. I look for stories that will inspire the young people I teach, I create stories that my parents would enjoy, I dream of stories that don’t yet exist, and I discover stories that have been tucked and hidden away. After all of that, I spend time questioning stories; who is telling these stories, who SHOULD be telling these stories, and why are these stories being told right now? Has anyone used the word “stories” so much in a single paragraph? Clearly, I’m invested in stories. But when I’m creating or assisting in the development of new work, I have to use more than pure imagination. There are hours upon hours of research that must be done. There are interviews to be conducted, museums to scour, biographies to read, music to devour, histories to explore, and cities to roam. My knowledge and world experience is not one of technology or animation but one of people and their connections. I strive to bring these connections into the stories I create. I hope to foster a spirit of play and curiosity in my work. I burn with it; it comes from a deep investment in the work being done, and the collaboration with other artists. My journey from bookworm to professional theatre artist has been filled with plot twists, heroes, and the occasional musical interlude. I became a red nose clown, started devising new theatre, and played with puppets. I taught young people how to move, sing, and use their voices to build their confidence. I even went to circus school. I could spend pages describing how each of these experiences have brought me closer to you, but I know that you don’t have that kind of time. So I’ll be brief. I’ve been working, dreaming, and scheming for years, as so many others have, to find my place in this world.
