Michele Ahern has over twenty-five years of public service experience working to reduce poverty and improve support to needy families. She currently serves as an Assistant Deputy Commissioner with the New York City Office of Child Support Services, which collects over $780 million in child support annually for families with children. Over the course of her career, Michele has held both policy and operational roles, both in New York and in the federal government. Prior to her current role, she was the Chief Advisor to the Commissioner of the NYC Human Resources Administration (HRA), the City’s principal social services agency, serving more than three million New Yorkers annually. At the federal level, Michele was a senior budget analyst at the federal Office of Management and Budget, where she had budget, policy and regulatory oversight responsibility for income support programs, including the federal child support program and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. She began her government career at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, conducting analyses of 1996 welfare reform legislation. Michele holds a Master in Public Policy from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Child Support Engagement Association (NCSEA) and serves on NCSEA’s Policy and Government Relations and Finance Committees.
