INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGNSince earning the PhD, I've applied my skills in argumentation and writing to construct and refine highly effective instructional materials along with impactful formal writings in academia, law, and nonfiction for the general public. I also provide qualitative and quantitative research support.The first step in instructional design is assessing the unique learning group and grasping the content. All material must be carefully tailored--engagement suffers when material is either too easy or too hard, and different audiences have different requirements. Maximizing engagement means maximizing learning outcomes. Course length and format are then considered and specific learning outcomes developed. This forms the foundational course structure. The course is then developed for the specific learner group using either SMEs or authoritative texts, and put together with considerations of delivery format. Reinforcement materials are sprinkled strategically throughout as quizzes, discussion questions, writing prompts, worksheets, or other. Delivery is next. I develop thorough lesson plans that leverage best practices for adult learners for in-person delivery or write scripts for video delivery. Course delivery is as important as the content -- if the material is not delivered effectively, learning is difficult. I draw my expertise from both graduate training and 15 years experience in university classrooms where feedback is instant and clear. I'm also careful to optimally manage cognitive load.Assessment tools may follow Bloom's taxonomy or be survey-type or otherwise, depending on course goals.No course is created perfectly, and adjustments are always necessary once the course has live learners. Learner performance is analyzed to identify weaknesses in material delivery or test questions or both. Adjustments are made to the course to optimize learner performance.SIDE PROJECTSMy interests are expansive thanks to the wide variety of topics that have crossed my desk. I put together collections of science in all major life areas: body, mind, spirit, emotions, and relationships. This collection is self-published as Whacked Out (Amazon).Whacked Out provides the basis for 1- and 2-week instructional programs on healing and well-being: Retreats take place in the tropics to maximize impact. I am currently directing full-scale empowerment retreats in Costa Rica and the Brazilian Amazon. I hire and manage staff, am impeccable with all detail, and ensure optimal participant engagement every moment of every day to maximize program benefits.
