Recently named NYLA’s 2021 School Librarian of the Year, Michell’s elementary yearbook picture caption could have read, "Least Likely to Love Books"! From Pre-K thru Grade 5 she was allergic to words! (A phrase borrowed from “The Ink Drinker'' by Eric Sanvoisin) But her parents and sisters intervened, changing the trajectory of her life. Her big sister appeared on the bookmobile, as her first librarian, outside her primary school in Jamaica, West Indies. As Michell was transported into different worlds, she developed appreciation for people’s stories. Michell has worked as an educator for over 35 years in different educational settings. She believes in teaching outside the box to build robust learning communities. Michell’s goal is to build a collaboration-nation that promotes student voice and choice, ensuring equity, access and inclusion, not just now when it's popular, but always. Michell intends to continue taking others on journeys of discovery of self, the world, helping them tell and find stories, to continue the cycle of sharing for as long as humanly possible.
