I am passionate about the importance of living a high quality life and making a meaningful impact on the world. Leveraging my skills and experience built over 20 years in academic medicine, I am providing oversight to the pediatric clinical drug development process; teaching parents how to help their children learn healthy coping skills through mindfulness-based practices; and supporting physicians and other medical professionals in finding career fulfillment and balance between professional and personal life.

Faculty MemberDuke University Medical Center 1998 - Apr 2016UsAfter completing pediatric residency in 1998, I was invited to join the Duke faculty. I served the Durham community as a primary care provider until 2008 and then transitioned to the medical management of childhood obesity and its associated comorbidities in the Duke Children's Healthy Lifestyles program. I honed my communication skills with ongoing Motivational Interviewing training to provide intensive lifestyle counseling to children and their families. For 10 years, I taught as a faculty member in the Practice Course, Duke's foundational program on patient interviewing and physical exam skills for first and second year medical students. During my tenure at Duke, I also actively participated in educational initiatives in the Department of pediatrics and the School of Medicine, focused on healthy stress management program development for medical students, residents and faculty. -
Director - Medical EducationDuke Integrative Medicine Dec 2007 - Jun 2015Directed and developed didactic and interactive educational programs for medical students, resident physicians and faculty at Duke to increase knowledge of complementary therapies, integrative approaches to medical conditions and new models of health care. -
Bravewell FellowProgram In Integrative Medicine, University Of Arizona) 2005 - 2006The Fellowship program in Integrative Medicine introduced me to mind-body medicine and reaffirmed my belief in the innate capacity of healing through a whole-person approach to health. I had the opportunity to take my first Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction class at Duke Integrative Medicine during this time. The combination of these two experiences were personally transformative for me. Since completing my fellowship I have incorporated mindfulness-based practices into my clinical work with children and helped develop mindfulness-based stress management programs for health professionals.
