For a decade I have worked as a radio journalist in Cape Town, Dubai and California. I love talk/news/public radio and have been lucky enough to experience this through a variety of different roles: producer, reporter, news reader/newscaster and anchor/host.I currently work at KCLU as a Digital Content and Podcast Producer. This NPR station covers Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties along the California coast. Before that (from 2019 to mid-2021) I worked across the Monterey Bay Area as a reporter and host for KAZU (NPR for the Monterey Bay Area). My stories focused on the issues that affect the community locally including the COVID-19 pandemic, the opioid crisis in the community, the study of fog and a look at how goats are used to prevent wildfires. Three of my stories (on coronavirus testing, the Monterey Jazz Festival going virtual and dangerous debris flows) were featured on The California Report, a statewide program. I was also part of the news team that won an Edward R. Murrow award for our coverage of the four major wildfires that ravaged the Central Coast in 2020. As a local host I presented NPR's All Things Considered and APM's Marketplace. I also handled breaking news coverage. As a reporter and host in Dubai I covered a wide range of topics from breaking news to lifestyle events. I have reported on presidential addresses (Obama on the UAE), tragic plane crashes (Emirates and flydubai) and historic occasions (Solar Impulse 2 landing in Abu Dhabi). I have produced features on Michelin starred chefs (there are a lot of them), comedians (Trevor Noah), TED speakers and albino alligators (their names were Ali and Blue). I was also the main correspondent for the Dubai International Film Festival. I have had the opportunity to interview an array of international personalities such as Simon Sinek, Akon, Giuliana Rancic, Paris Hilton, Vincent Willem van Gogh, and philanthropist Jane Goodall. As I producer in Dubai I have worked on every kind of show imaginable - business, health, culture, food, careers, education, parenting, psychology, travel and politics. I have created new shows and re-launched established ones. It is extremely rewarding working with talented colleagues, creating fantastic content and interacting with loyal listeners. I have also worked as a travel journalist and experienced first-hand the destinations on which I have covered (in long-form audio stories): Sri Lanka, Mauritius, San Francisco and Rwanda to name just a few.
