Our volunteer team spans three countries and incorporates two languages. Volunteers include our clinical team, the intake team, training, those who help with transportation, food distribution, adoption coordinators, store volunteers, and all of the people who work behind the scenes to keep these programs going.The dogs available for adoption are fostered in the home of their rescuer (“rescatista” in Spanish). Rescatistas care for these dogs through injuries and illnesses as well as behavior issues that come from being abandoned and living on the street. The amount of work involved in getting a dog from a mangy street dog to one that is a sweet, furry, friendly adoptable pet is enormous. It is emotional and sometimes heartbreaking. Our team spends months and some spend a year or more rehabilitating a rescue dog only to say goodbye when it is adopted. Then they go and rescue another and start all the process all over again.This is how Baja Dogs works. We support rescatistas with food, veterinary care, adoption support, transportation to the new home, training, and supplies. Rescatistas educate their friends, neighbors and family by setting an example of how to rescue and then properly care for a dog. They preach sterilization (spaying and neutering) to anyone who will listen. Often, they recruit new rescatistas and teach them how to make a difference in the life of an abandoned dog.
