I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Studies at the University of British Columbia. My academic interest is in increasing the role of academic research in facilitating debate and expanding public policy options in areas of K-12 and higher education. I teach and conduct research in the areas of media education, educational policy, university rankings and equity and education. Prior to my career as an academic, I was a communications director and policy advisor in areas of education, and children’s rights and protection. I facilitated participatory research projects and collaborative media production with youth. I also worked with journalists on a daily basis and wrote materials aimed at maximizing media coverage and policymaker uptake. I created a course that engaged graduate students in translating their research into Op-Eds, stand-up comedy, podcasts, photo-stories and short animations.
