Throughout my career, I have worked within public and private organizations in leadership roles, and now I am seeking to use the knowledge and expertise gained to become a member of a Board of Directors with organizations with a global reach. MY BACKGROUNDMy life and career journey have been interesting; one thing I have certainly demonstrated is my love for a challenge! After attaining a Science degree focused on Neuropsychology, my life path shifted to representing Canada on the world stage, first in Basketball, followed by Athletics. I have been privileged to have won six Paralympic gold medals, nine world championships and multiple world records. This experience has provided me with focus, endurance, persistence and patience that I have channelled into my leadership roles with private and public organizations. Through my sports, I became an ambassador for large national brands and sponsors, including LuLulemon, RBC, Air Canada and Coca Cola.In addition, to my sporting career, I created a motivational public speaking company offering presentations globally on goal setting and reaching success utilizing personal stories on the international sporting stage and personal adversity to inspire audiences to overcome natural and self-imposed obstacles on the road to success. This experience connected me with organizations and leaders worldwide and gained an understanding of how they operated. Serving as the MLA for Parksville Qualicum, my portfolio included being the Minister of 2nd largest ministry, the Ministry of Social Development & Social Innovation, managing a budget of $3.2B, with a staff of 4,000 located in 30 offices province-wide.As the Minister, I developed skills in navigating and building consensus through collaboration and compromise with diverse groups with conflicting and multiple agendas. As a spokesperson with the media, I ensured that the message portrayed was that of the governments. KEY INITIATIVES:➞ Launched the initiative to make BC the most inclusive jurisdiction by 2024, establishing an accessibility lens on regulations and legislation within the government. ➞ Initiated the President Group bringing together key business leaders (Vancity, YVR, BC Hydro, Telus, Destination BC, SAP, and Vancouver Port Authority) to champion more accessible, inclusive workplaces. After my work as an MLA, I was the Director of Rapid Testing. l set up rapid testing clinics at the Vancouver airport with satellite locations in Nanaimo and Calgary. The timelines were aggressive, and we met every target. I look forward to connecting.
