About Michelle Yuan

As a recent graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, I am currently pursuing research at the Cho/Cheng Dermatology Laboratory, University of California, San Francisco. My work focuses on single-cell RNA sequencing of psoriasis and dermatitis rashes, aiming to establish patient-specific molecular profiles to enhance our understanding of targeted treatment responses.     As a Junior Specialist, my role is a mosaic of basic science research, clinical study coordination, and laboratory management. In collaboration with several pharmaceutical companies, I help to manage five clinical research protocols by coordinating, tracking, and attending appointments with study patients to consent participants, prepare instruments for a biopsy procedure, collect skin or blood specimen, and prepare study medication. In conjunction to these clinical studies, I am involved in the single-cell workflow in which I perform 2-day skin dissociation to obtain an immune cell suspension for single-cell RNA sequencing. Upon completion of sequencing, I help to organize and collect quality control metrics to share with data analyst collaborators. Outside of our single-cell work, I help create, pilot, and optimize novel methods of exploring the human transcriptome, most recently including spatial transcriptomics molecular profiling.

    As the Director of Kesem Berkeley, I led our efforts to surpass our FY2023 fundraising goal and set the chapter record of $215,204.14 raised in one year. Throughout the year, I bridged the UC Berkeley chapter to Kesem Nationals and managed an executive board of 18 officers and 236 student counselors. I provided daily support and strategic vision to executive board members to work towards our fundraising and operational efforts, such as executing our annual Make the Magic Fundraising event, as well as leading two weeks of in-person summer camp, where we served over 210 campers in 2023.

    During my time as the head of Operations, I ran and oversaw a 10-day long summer camp for 213 campers aged 6-18 during the summer of 2022. In preparation for camp, I trained a team of 78 camp counselors on behavior management and grief support, developed a fundraising budget of $170,000 to use toward camp supplies, campsite staffing, and external vendors. During the two weeks of in-person camp, I managed all campsite communication, programs and activities, and supply organization.
