Michelle Au, Md, Mph Email and Phone Number
I am an attending anesthesiologist at Emory-St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, GA. My interests include clinical care, writing, communication, and public health. I also have extensive experience in narrative non-fiction and public speaking. I started a medical blog "The Underwear Drawer" in the year 2000, and was one of the Internet’s first medical bloggers. During my third year of medical school, I started penning the “Scutmonkey” medical comic strip series; some of the best known comics include “The Twelve Types of Medical Students” and “The Twelve Medical Specialty Stereotypes.” The Scutmonkey comics have been featured and presented in medical journals and conferences around the world. I also wrote a medical memoir entitled THIS WON'T HURT A BIT (AND OTHER WHITE LIES), published by Grand Central Publishing in 2011. My writing has been featured in The Atlantic, The Boston Globe, Slate, Psychology Today, and KevinMD. A full list of prior speaking engagements can be provided upon request, but include talks at Harvard University, The University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, The Johns Hopkins University, the UC Davis School of Medicine, The Iowa Writer's Workshop, and the Georgia Society of the American College of Surgeons. I have been a keynote speaker at the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the South Carolina Medical Association, as well as the Wellesley College Hippocratic Society, and have given medical school commencement addresses at the Wright State Boonshoft School of Medicine and the Louisiana State University School of Medicine. I often speak about issues related to anesthesiology, women in medicine, work-life balance, and social media. In addition to clinical work, my career goals involve writing and the communication of important ideas related to medicine. I would also like to become more involved in healthcare policy discussions on the state and federal level, and recently completed a Masters in Public Health at Columbia University to more fully participate in these conversations.
