The Arthritis Health Professions Association (AHPA) is a dedicated group of health care professionals and students, researchers and trainees, and administrators from across Canada who are passionate about improving the care of people with rheumatic diseases. AHPA attempts to meet the learning needs of its members through online education and by fostering networking amongst its members. AHPA supports health professional research in several ways including the provision of research grants, as well as assisting researchers in study recruitment and knowledge dissemination. Finally, AHPA collaborates with other professional and patient organizations to advocate for and to provide optimal care and quality of life for every Canadian living with arthritis.

In 2019, AHPA formally established the ACPAC Special Interest Group (SIG) within its organizational structure. To date, work has focused on advancing ACPAC roles within the healthcare system by establishing pillars and priorities, of which Leadership is the foundation for our pillars of Advocacy, Research and Education.

• Provided in-home OT assessments (i.e., home safety, fall prevention, seating/positioning, cognition) to adults and seniors with various disabilities, and developed/implemented comprehensive treatment programs customized to achieve their personal therapeutic goals. • Instructed clients and/or their support network (i.e., family, personal support workers, friends) on appropriate use of home safety and mobility equipment, and safe transfers and ADL techniques, that increases independence and function.• Advocated on client’s behalf for funding through multiple insurance companies and agencies. (Time period is with the exception of a one year leave of absence.)

Erie St. Clair

• Participated in the development and implementation of an inter-disciplinary program providing comprehensive assessments to clients suffering from chronic pain in the Erie St. Clair district, and created/executed the occupational therapy component.• Based on clients’ goals and occupational needs, provided clients with treatment recommendations and referrals to community resources, in order to enhance their quality of life and independence.• Educated clients about the importance of goal setting and becoming active self-managers. • Provided health education regarding fall prevention, home safety, pacing, grading activities, body mechanics and joint protection, energy conservation and fatigue management, exercise, sleep hygiene, healthy eating, and relaxation techniques. • Successfully implemented behaviour change strategies, such as motivational interviewing and brief action planning, to assist in empowering clients to achieve their functional goals.(Time period is with the exception of a one year leave of absence.)

• Accepted patient referrals from healthcare professionals and dispensed custom and off-the-shelf braces and orthotics, compression therapy, and wellness products. • Provided quality, client-centered service by educating clients about their physical diagnoses, and about the recommended product(s), and offered follow-up support.• Supervised students from the University of Windsor’s Human Kinetics program.• Participated in the development of a new point of sales software system.

Windsor/Essex County

• Referred by Work Transition Specialists and Return to Work Specialists to perform Functional Work Capacity assessments in order to assist in the return to work process for the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board. • Determined job suitability of available work by observing and discussing the target job tasks in order to determine if the job demands were within the worker’s medical restrictions, post work-related injury.• Educated workers about pacing, grading tasks, ergonomics, pain management, etc.
