I was involved in various projects, all of which share the common goal of reducing the Athletic Department's environmental impact and building a sustainable culture within the Yale athletic community and beyond.My primary project was the development of recycling plans for two of Yale's athletic facilities, the main gymnasium and hockey rink. This responsibility required me to perform in-depth research on recycling systems and strategies, to build and maintain strong relationships with Yale's administrative staff, and to write a comprehensive and detailed proposal. The plans were partially adopted in the fall of 2012 with the first recycling bins placed in Yale's varsity locker rooms. Throughout my senior year, I also contributed to other sustainability projects including outreach and communication to the Yale athletic community, "Green Team" certification, and coordination of sustainable practices (mainly recycling and composting efforts) at the Athletic Department's social events and football games. As a member of Yale Special Olympics (YSO), I helped organize the "Spread the Word to End the Word" on-campus campaign. The campaign is a one-day event in which YSO raises awareness of intellectual slurs by informing people of their hurtful and dehumanizing effects. I also volunteered once a week at sports clinics in Hamden, CT teaching basketball to intellectually disabled individuals of all ages.
