A volunteer, member-driven organization, The NRWA was founded in 1997 and quickly cemented its position as the industry’s leading nonprofit trade association for professional resume writers. Now known as Distinctive Career Services, LLC, Distinctive Documents was one of the Internet's first professional resume writing firms. As a multiply certified professional resume writer, Michelle Dumas developed a reputation as one of the nation's top professional resume writers. She and her team delivered resume writing services to thousands of professionals in all 50 U.S. states and worldwide.

The majority of Michelle's early career was spent in a variety of entrepreneurial and small business activities, including real estate investing and property management (which is still ongoing), sales as an independent contractor, and the most prominent--owning and managing a convenience store and pizza parlor. Throughout, while continuing to work and as an adult student with a young family, Michelle pursued her degree at UNH, graduating summa cum laude and with highest honors in her major.For a couple of years, Michelle put her psychology training to use, working in social services as a case manager for adolescent foster children living in a group home. As part of this job, Michelle was in charge of managing the "independent living" program which taught the older residents resume writing, job search, and career skills. Throughout, Michelle did a great deal of research, contacting professional resume writers and job search counselors and reading many books on resume writing and job search topics, to ensure the most up-to-date information was being provided to residents. This was the beginning of her interest in the employment services field. She launched her business part-time, eventually transitioning to managing her full-time venture, Distinctive Documents, in 1996.
