Designed and constructed a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) compatible perfusion system with gas, temperature, and pH control for agarose gel threads embedded with cells. Acquired T1, T2, and diffusion NMR measurements to differentiate between extra and intracellular water of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). These parameters can ultimately be correlated with cell density and allow non-invasive real time monitoring of vascularization in a HUVECs seeded scaffold. The shear stress distribution inside the bioreactor was optimized by controlling fluid flow through multiple inlets. Directed transition to BSL2 lab as biosafety officer.

Led the stability studies for Kogenate (a recombinant FVIII protein used to treat hemophilia) for a novel temporary storage bag used in manufacturing. Authored the protocols for allocated batches and executed the transfer of material to appropriate containers per SOP. Communicated time points and delivered the samples to QC stability group for testing and reporting of stability data

Fabricated an external bioartificial pancreas by the injection of human Islets of Langerhans into a hemofilter, a device normally utilized to treat renal failure. Conducted preliminary testing to obtain membrane permeability parameters and islet viability/quantification. Built a Matlab simulation of the fluid dynamics within a hemofilter to determine the optimal flow rate for the detection of a glucose stimulated insulin response. Ultimately this cell-based treatment for diabetics can be adapted as an ambulatory device that is more precise and accurate than current manual insulin injections.
