About Michelle Sargent

Graphic design, marketing, content strategy, UX, PR, law, and human rights are the CliffsNotes of interests that have swept me off my feet. Don't ask me about my student debt or my unread Kindle samples. Okay, do. I've been reading Robert A Caro's, The Power Broker for 6 years and counting. That's dedication. A quarter-life crisis drove me to Vancouver for 4 years, where I met my true love: content strategy. I'm a sucker for complicated organisations and thorny problems, which explains my higher ed rap sheet. At IDP Education, I lead a global-local content strategy covering something like 33 countries and 7 regions. I connect the world-wide content community, influence from within and make it up as I go – to transform the customer experience. And I don't do it alone. I lead a team of interested and interesting people who truly care about making a difference to the lives of our customers.

  • Idp Education Ltd
    Content And Social Strategist
Idp Education Ltd Apr 2018 - Aug 2019
    Melbourne, Australia
Starting a new life overseas might be both the easiest and the hardest decision you will ever make. It takes courage, belief in yourself, and resilience. And you may not have any of those three things when you first decide 'yes, I'm going to do this.' Our counsellors around the world support international students with personalised advice and knowledge, from one human to another. This empathy and trust is at the core of what makes IDP special. My team is on the journey to bring this in-person connection across to our digital channels so students feel supported with the right content, at the time they need it, in the channel they expect it in. We use data to drive content decisions around the research stage, application process, and smooth international arrival. We work on a global scale with colleagues and student contributors to create content that inspires, educates and gets to the heart of what students are going through at each stage of the journey.
  • Sportshosts
    Digital Marketing Director
    Sportshosts Oct 2017 - Apr 2018
    Melbourne, Australia
Sports connects people. It's a universal language that allows local fans and travellers to embrace their differences and unite over a common interest, an intense live game, or crushing defeat. I was drawn to the SportHosts dream to break boundaries and bring together people through the power and emotion of sports. We provided a platform for international students and travellers to connect with local fans. People they would otherwise never have met. While at the startup, I learned a lot about myself and about surviving. I bootlegged and I drank beer with international travellers. I gained experience in corners of marketing I hadn't yet ventured. They say if learning isn't uncomfortable, you're not pushing yourself far enough. I pushed myself over the edge and left behind no regrets. Why? Because I believe – especially today – sports is a global link to understanding each other and our place in the world.

    Account Manager, Strategic Marketing
City Of Melbourne Mar 2015 - Aug 2016
    Melbourne, Australia
Can you recall your Melbourne moments? Sipping the perfect cold drip on Collins Street, running along Southbank against a cool breeze and wandering into Croft Institute's science experiment are some of mine.I was the community manager for the That's Melbourne social channels, content manager for the What's On blog and curator for the What's On social media hub. I told the city's story. The city is a collection of hidden coffee shops, vertical retail spaces, basement bars, rooftop pop-ups, secrets, surprises, and that place–you don't know it's name–but you kinda-sorta think you know which laneway it's down and the colour of the signage. I developed and implemented content marketing strategies that moved Melburnians to discover (and rediscover) Melbourne moments–this means translating the city around us into stories, pictures and videos.Melbourne's story is that of the Jersey boy, who opened a bagel joint off Flinders Lane and swore he'd never serve Vegemite–but caved. It's the story of father and son jewellers, who remain passionate in their 30-year-old business. It's the story of the cheesemonger, the fashion designer, the office worker, the busker, the uni student. It's your story.I created, curated and weaved these stories into a narrative that brought people into the city, where they discovered their own Melbourne moments and shared these with others.
  • Kids Under Cover
    Brand And Communications
Kids Under Cover Sep 2014 - Mar 2015
    Melbourne, Australia
At a time of major transition at Kids Under Cover, I played a comprehensive role both strategically and operationally. I was responsible for brand collateral, the annual report, supporter newsletters, public relations, social media, brand campaigns, online marketing and the website. I managed a brand identity redesign from concept to launch, including creating new key messages and an editorial style guide; developing photography and videography strategies; and working with a brand agency to create a new visual identity.I supervised an in-house contracted designer, sourced new suppliers and maintained relationships with printers, digital agencies, copywriters, and photographers. Most important, I introduced a new storytelling approach to the organisation: a narrative that explains the societal problem Kids Under Cover aims to solve and the improved outcomes its work offers to the lives of young people and their families.
  • University Of Melbourne
    Senior Content Strategist (Contract)
University Of Melbourne Mar 2014 - Sep 2014
I led the content strategy for student communications, including delivering a new website for students that reflected a complete spectrum of opportunities and presented information according to students’ interests, not organisational structure.I developed a card sorting activity for key stakeholders, facilitated surveys and focus groups with students and managed a content audit of 87 websites. Using research, web and digital analytics and student data, I introduced editorial and visual style guides, created audience personas and developed an editorial calendar and workflow.I project managed a team of six staff who acted as content champions for their various work areas. I trained staff on content creation and worked with subject matter experts to develop content narratives. I aimed to pass on my passion for developing and sharing content that enriches the lives of students; content that enhances learning outcomes; content that engages students in conversation; and content that helps to lessen the gap between the institution and the community it serves.

  • University Of British Columbia
    Communications Coordinator, Student Communications Services
University Of British Columbia Dec 2011 - Sep 2013
    Vancouver, Canada Area
My undergraduate experience was ordinary. I didn't go on exchange, join a student club or volunteer in my community. I never sought academic help; I'm not sure it existed. My university delivered an endless torrent of impersonal and irrelevant messages. I disengaged. I was a student number. At UBC, I worked with Student Services units and others across campus to encourage students to have meaningful and rewarding experiences. I coordinated disconnected messages from all corners of the University into a central strategy. I communicated with students through many channels. And I've been on the receiving end. My irreverence made me more creative, genuine, and damn good at my job. Students need to know they're not a number.
