About Michelle Light
For my entire professional life, I've been devoted to maximizing potential and impact. Over the years, whether at a nonprofit organization or a government agency or independently on my own, I’ve served in unusual positions blending my sense of purpose, passion, practicality, and possibility. I’ve worked with diverse partners to unlock opportunities, bring ideas to life, and create meaningful, lasting value. I’ve handled complicated challenges and managed multi-faceted projects through to completion, straddling strategy, culture, and implementation. What further distinguishes me now is the artful balancing of my own leadership expertise with leadership coaching and group facilitation with others. This is my most recent endeavor and a natural progression in my unique career. I know what it takes to unleash real positive change, internally and externally. What have been some key elements of my success?1. I have bold, ambitious ideas. So do lots of people. Few translate them into action. Execution is what matters, and I do top-notch execution. 2. Throughout my career, I’ve stepped into roles that did not exist before to nurture and manage relationships with people that I’d never met before on a topic that I’d never directly worked on before. 3. I do not shy away from ambiguity. Time and again, I've chartered a course through unchartered waters.4. I am comfortable with discomfort. 5. I stretch for self-insight. I am hungry and thirsty to learn and grow. I am willing to try and fail and try again. To me, we never know our own reach unless we stretch. 6. I delight in discovery. I'm inherently curious and catch on quickly. I listen. I ask questions. Since I was 2-years-old, my mom would say that my favorite words were “Why?” “Why not?” and “What if?”7. I'm a problem-solver. Give me a problem, I'll solve it. One of my greatest compliments came from a Chicago Dept of Streets & Sanitation Commissioner. “You are like my personal Liquid Plumber. When things get stuck, you get them unstuck.”8. I've often operated at the nexus of law and policy to tackle hard social issues. So, I know how to take different perspectives into account, consider risk, nimbly adjust, and implement a wide range of strategies. 9. I see the big picture and the small details.10. I enjoy operating cross-functionally. I describe myself as a “horizontal agent in a vertical world.” I have a track record of fostering relationships with a variety of stakeholders and building powerful alliances.11. I am unapologetically allergic to mediocrity. 12. I live up to my promises.
