I'm a science and environmental journalist and the author of the book BELOVED BEASTS: Fighting for Life in an Age of Extinction (W.W. Norton, 2021). I'm the editor of the Life Up Close series at The Atlantic and a longtime contributing editor of the environmental journal High Country News, and my writing appears in The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, and other publications. I'm also the co-editor of The Science Writers' Handbook: Everything You Need to Know to Pitch, Publish and Prosper in the Digital Age (Da Capo, 2013) and the author of The Science Writers' Essay Handbook, supported by the National Association of Science Writers.Specialties: I specialize in writing about science, the environment, and the culture and politics of the American West.
