When I first ventured out on my own, I freelanced­ everywhere I could: design studios, publishing houses, in-house corporate departments and ad agencies. I worked on an incredible array of projects and learned so much from so many people. I was now a senior in my field, working with talented people for interesting clients. This is where I really fine-tuned my skills and found my place in the graphic design industry. An overseas holiday sparked the idea that I should become a freelancer to learn and experience more. So I did.

Fortunately, I had great mentors who collectively taught me how to set type and lay information out on a page. It was hard and rewarding work that gave me a proper skill set and an outlet for the neat-freak-in-me to shine.

My first real design job came during the late 90s property boom, when every agent suddenly wanted their own weekly property magazine. It was everything a first real job should be—crazy busy with a steep learning curve. I came away from it with solid time management skills and a clear understanding that investing time and effort into well-set-up templates leads to far fewer headaches and mess later.
