What was the last thing you ate? Through Foodways, the exploration of food traditions, we can learn a lot about one another. The term “foodways” refers to the foods or drink preferred by people… along with the circumstances under which these items are conceived, obtained, dispersed, preserved, prepared, and consumed. What people eat, when, and with whom is largely determined by both the culture people bring with them and the influences of their environment. As circumstances allow, people bring or develop their food preferences and customs, enabling them to maintain a sense of identity and cohesion by developing a personal food enclave. Food serves as instruments not only for routine nourishment, tradition, and community, but for the preservation of memories of the world they live in, left, or lost. By exploring our cultural food lives, including gatherings, sharing practices, preparation, consumption, and occupation, social scientists can view food as a source for understanding the ways in which people interact with each other and with their surroundings. By asking the student what he or she ate last, I can learn if 40oz of cotton candy with a vat of Takis was just ingested, thus, bequeathing me with a potentially hyper student for the next 40 minutes; perhaps the student skipped breakfast: is this because he/she was not hungry or because there was nothing to eat at home? Perhaps, a dish, unknown to me, can be implemented into a lesson. Endless possibilities.
