I did my PhD in computational linguistics where I developed methods that are specifically apt for social science. I combined the usage of embeddings and lexical-semantic knowledge to cope with hard problems for machine learning scenarios where one faces small training data sets with large skews in distribution. Having in mind the goal of maximizing transparency, I also plead not to learn always everything from scratch, especially not what we already know. The goal must be to integrate prior knowledge and the power of data-driven models. Empirically, this basically unsupervised approach outperforms standard supervised machine learning approaches and has a vast field of application.Nowadays (2023 and forward) I create hybrid systems between LLMs, transformers, NLP methods, general ML , knowledge-based information, and some GOFAI sprinkling for automated media content analysis in research as well as in our company Concepttt GmbH.
