Profile bio

About Mick Canavan

I have over 25 years experience of working on a wide variety of Deaf related projects - both technical and non-technical. For a number of years I worked as a researcher and also as a project manager at the Centre for Deaf Studies (Bristol University) on a number of UK and EU funded academic projects. In 2003 I left the Centre to set up a social enterprise focussing on Deaf accessibility and the production of sign related materials in both the private the public sector. This frequently involved collaboration with Deaf organisations and a range of Deaf professionals. My experiences of raising a Deaf child in a tri-lingual household British Sign Language/English/French was, in itself, a fascinating and educational journey. In Bristol I was extensively involved with The Family Centre for Deaf Children (FCDC), first as a committee member, then as Chair (twice). I have also been a parent governor and Chair of governors at Elmfield Deaf school for many years. This gave me great insights in to the challenges facing teachers and Deaf children in educational settings. I have extensive knowledge of the following:- video work - lighting, shooting, scripting, editing and delivery on a wide variety of platforms- web development (not so much graphic design but the nuts and bolts of developing a web presence)- e-learning - https://literacy.eyesign.co.uk/- project management- developing project proposals and writing reports and/or articles- the development of multimedia guides for museums and art galleriesI am keen to work with other social enterprises, schools, charities and like minded individuals on any projects that might benefit from my skills and experiences. I have an extremely wide variety of interests, many of which are non-Deaf related. I am also happy to offer advice or help if I can, so please feel free to ask any questions that you may have.

Listed skills include Research, Training, Management, Mental Health, and 14 others.

SignWeb is a registered company in the UK but exists as a non-profit social enterprise. It is a conduit through which I develop new ideas, new interests and engage with a variety of projects as a freelancer. The company primarily focusses upon issues relating to accessibility issues, education and health information for the Deaf community and for hearing families with Deaf children. My most recent collaboration has been a European funded project to complete an E-Learning resource for Deaf people who wish to improve their literacy skills. I now host and maintain this course independently and provide it for free.
