He'd constantly surprise me with his very well formulated thoughts and questions which were carefully chosen after having done a fair amount research on the topic to have productive discussions. It was great having those conversations because he'd connect the dots really quickly and I'd love seeing how his neurons would fire up processing new information. His smart and inquisitive mind made it very enjoyable to spend time together talking not only about work but also travel, hobbies, food, etc. I was also very impressed with Mick when he'd take on projects, because he was super thorough about thinking through all scenarios in a very methodological approach. He would leave no stone unturned, no matter how complex the situation was. It was quite invigorating to see him explain his thought process and suggestions, and although, at times and for good reason, he'd struggle communicating complex scenarios, it was easy to see where he was going because he'd rely on charts, tables, formulas, etc. he'd create to explain his own thoughts. His actual project execution was also great. He'd write code showing great care for programming principles. He'd do his best to make the code reusable/extensible/configurable (at times a bit too much haha). He'd proactively ask for feedback and was always very open to all sorts of input without ever taking it badly, even if the feedback implied making a really big change in approach, because he'd see it as an opportunity to learn more. He showed at natural aptitude at foreseeing issues that were easy to miss -- for example circular dependencies across systems that would make deployments without downtime impossible -- and would offer alternatives to avoid such issues. Also, Mick is super responsible and when he's got ownership of something, you know he won't rest until things get done and work as smoothly as humanly possible. As my mentee, I also really enjoyed working with Mick because he'd seek advise on various topics regarding his professional future and I could tell he had ambition and drive to take his career on his hands instead of just sailing by like most do. Personality wise, Mick was a big part of the team's "soul". He was friendly, energetic, polite, funny and not afraid of laughing at himself. He's also got a very sincere and kind personality which makes it very easy for everyone to grow fond of him. Overall, I'm very sure Mick will go very far in life and I'll be very happy if our paths cross again."
