Profile bio

About Mick Van Gelderen

I am at the forefront of software development with Rust and currently offering my expertise through freelancing under Mick Works. Feel free to reach out to me through LinkedIn. I'm interested in the green energy industry. I like working for companies that sell physical products. The past two years I spent automating transport in greenhouses and warehouses. Before that I obtained master's degree on computer graphics (I'm quite proud of the result, see the video in my spotlight). I have done some freelancing under my company Mick Works and worked part-time on various projects doing front-end, back-end, embedded, and android programming.I tend to seek a deep understanding of the topics I am interested in. After programming as a hobby and then professionally for 15 years this has resulted in a solid understanding of programming concepts. This allows me to quickly adopt new languages and tools. In a team setting I tend to be someone who speaks up if processes are not running smoothly or when we need to take a step back to look at the bigger picture. I strive to be a part of a well functioning team that is delivering value to customers while building maintainable code at a good pace.

Rust Expert

Current

The use of Rust in software-development is gaining popularity. The produced software contains less security vulnerabilities than software produced with C/C++ and the developments can, in my experience, be completed faster.Volkswagen is making use of my expertise to, in collaboration with other departments, make recommendations for how to utilize Rust. This includes exploring and configuring tooling to do automated static and dynamic code analysis to ensure the software is of excellent quality as well as determining if from a business perspective, making a commitment to Rust make sense.

Mick Works was created in order to sell a project I did for a restaurant which smartly maneuvered itself through the Covid crisis by transitioning to a bulk order based sales model.I used worked at a Chinese restaurant which was transitioning to a bulk takeout/order based model and became very successful. The manually wrote down the orders and then later wrote that with black ink on plastic lids. The delivery guys often couldn't read that information. All of this often led to mistakes and therefore loss of business.I built an ordering system where they could enter customers' orders. The owners and the delivery people had a single up to date view of the orders. I also added the ability to print orders using a label printer. These labels contained complete and readable information for the delivery people and were easily placed on the boxes. I built a live dashboard and installed a monitor and RaspberryPI for the kitchen so they could see how much they chicken/beef/veggies they needed to prepare.

ROCSYS is developing a low cost robot that can automatically charge electric vehicles making use of existing intended-for-human infrastructure. My team and I were responsible for making the robot work as intended. In my year there we have enhanced the vision system, created automated test infrastructure to measure our current performance and shared it so we could propery prioritize our work, reworked configuration management, got rid of systematic errors in the motion control system and much more. It was a super intense year. We learned a lot of lessons and had a lot of fun while making meaningful contributions enabling the success of the company.

Logiqs builds carriers, lifts, automated tracks and other machines and installs them at greenhouses and recently warehouses to automate internal logistics. As an example, in order to save space, young plants are tightly packed and moved into a growing room until they become too big. They need to be moved back to a processing room where robots space the plants out for further growing. Eventually they end up getting packed and sold.My team maintained and extended the control software for these machines. This software has successfully provided greenhouse operators with the ability to automate logistical processes and trouble shooting aid for over 13 years. Current challenges are to make the logistics more intelligent, to support even bigger greenhouses and recently warehouses, to provide public interfaces with which our customers can have external parties integrate, to provide insight into the performance of the system, to improve the tooling around creating a virtual instance of the greenhouse, and more.Besides helping develop and maintain the software, I worked on improving communications between customers and other departments and to improve the culture of our team around accountability, and around software quality and testing.

The TU Delft Bicycle and Motorcycle Dynamics group was working on a bicycle simulator. I was responsible for the transmission and visualisation of sensor data from a bicycle simulator.
