IBM bought Mick’s contract from Arcadia plc as part of an outsourcing deal. He carried on working on the Arcadia account for a further two years. Specific areas of activity included :-* Continued support and development of Arcadia’s middleware. This included modifications to incorporate several new brands with disparate business rules.* Evaluation of the next generation of software from Arcadia’s POS supplier. This included development of initial components that would allow the new software to be integrated with existing systems for evaluation.* Development of monitoring components that allowed IBM to check and report upon levels of service being delivered.* Devising the strategy for moving a heavily loaded PC Development department towards object based development and component reuse. Involved development of boilerplate components in several languages, and working them into the schedule of each developer without destroying productivity.* Development of a Staff Scheduling System to be used across Arcadia’s 2000 store estate. The application allowed dynamic cost and staff planning to be carried out by multiple tiers of management.* Development of middleware that allowed client stores to seamlessly change mail platforms.* Assistance with development of standard IBM documentation detailing client business systems and practices.* Investigation, documentation and redevelopment of several tools inherited from departed developers.

Lead developer for Arcadia’s branch middleware services. Later seconded to a specialist team in Leeds to integrate these services. Subsequently provided services to various support, implementation and development functions.Specific areas of activity included :-* Led development of Arcadia’s branch middleware services to provide transparent maintenance of in-store systems from Arcadia’s corporate AS400s to successfully hit extremely tight deadlines.* Worked with a specialist team to integrate till systems with a new third party back office suite. Mick was ultimately the member of the team who took technical problems and provided the developers from all Consortium members with suggestions and relevant data to enable these problems to be progressed. This was a job which required good development skills, lots of tact and the patience of a saint!* Worked with Arcadia’s second and third line support functions. Mick’s low level knowledge of the product set was used to map problems to specific suppliers and provide them with the information required to progress those problems.* Ongoing development of Arcadia’s branch middleware. The new system evolved in many areas between the integration phase and October ’98. Mick was responsible for all additional branch middleware development required to support this.* Building and managing Arcadia’s Technical Installation Team. This team interfaced with regional installation managers, engineers and suppliers to resolve any hardware or software problems which could prevent newly installed branches or training centres from going live. It was also the second line support function for branches training on the new system.* Specification and development of various tools to automatically report on system and staff usage issues on all networked machines in Arcadia's branches* Specification and development of Gold Build tools to help automatically build servers/tills for the new system as required.
