Sr. Consultant with OPSYS, Inc. providing all aspects of IBM mainframe operating system expertise to government and private corporations. Systems programming, hardware configuration, telecommunications, performance, problem resolution, disaster recovery, etc.

Providing HP with z/OS, z/VM and z/Linux systems programming expertise in support of their Department of Homeland Security (DHS) contract. Currently planning and implementing a RHEL 6.3 based z/Linux environment for the conversion of the DHS Oracle based financial systems from a z/OS environment to a z/Linux environment. Additionally, providing ongoing hardware configuration, performance management, maintenance and general systems programming support for the DHS mainframe systems. Upgraded the production DHS/FFMS environment from z/OS 1.11 to z/OS 1.13. Previously provided architectural planning and technical engineering to support the relocation of the DHS Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) primary datacenter. That environment consisted of twin z/196 processors running z/OS 1.12, z/VM 6.1 and z/LINUX 5.4 on 29 LPARs supporting CICS, DB2, DATACOM, MQ, and WebSphere applications. Responsibilities included developing a comprehensive system migration plan, hardware technology upgrade engineering, selection and configuration of the mainframe processors and peripherals for the new primary site, data replication planning, software assurance, DR site upgrade planning, and general mainframe systems programming expertise where needed

Identified and implemented general z/OS 1.10 and WLM specific performance improvements for a large multi-datacenter parallel SYSPLEX environment (z/OS, CICS, DB2). Provided overall z/OS maintenance (SMP/E), hardware configuration (HCD, I/O device setup) and troubleshooting support (OMEGAMON, IPCS, EREP, LOGREC). Trained incumbent staff on FICON director and I/O pathway configuration techniques to improve I/O performance, throughput and redundancy. Additional tasks consist of developing a global plan for datacenter consolidation and possible relocation, disaster contingency planning and 24/7 on-call problem resolution support.

Provided performance management and system software tuning support for z/OS, JES2, CICS, DB2, WebSphere and associated program products on 26 LPARs on 15 CECs comprising over 52,000 MIPS. Also responsible for providing hardware and software problem analysis support for root cause identification and resolution. Other duties include consulting with other UPS technical staff on future directions for hardware and software configurations, creating ad hoc performance reports, training of junior staff, providing application groups with design, benchmarking, tuning and performance diagnostic support and providing technical input to long term capacity planning decisions.

Provided z/OS, OS/390, JES2, JES3, hardware configuration and associated program product support to the IBM Global Systems Division NE datacenter. Additionally, provided support for business recovery, LINUX, storage management, performance management, TCPIP, network and security management teams. Responsibilities included overall operating system installation, configuration, customization and maintenance, problem determination and resolution, system modification and exit support, and Unix system services support. Installed and configured z/OS 1.6 for a major account. Designed and implemented a flashcopy procedure to clone systems across LPARS. Provided hardware configuration and operating system programming support for the outsourcing of a customer datacenter. Completed certification training for support of FDA regulated accounts.

Provided systems programming support for a major pharmaceutical company. Ongoing tasks included planning and defining the hardware-complex configurations using HCD, installing, configuring and maintaining the operating systems and support software and enabling new system software functionality. Major projects consisted of installing and configuring OS/390 Rel 2.9, including the initial setup and use of the UNIX System Services component of OS/390 for TCP/IP and WebSphere support, installation of a z/OS disaster recovery system and implementing a LINUX system LPAR for e-business development. In support of their Y2K project, implemented their initial OS/390 release across multiple LPARs and mainframes and supported the migration of their ESA/4.2 and 4.3 systems to OS/390 with minimal disruption to users. Additionally, provided technical support for multi-access spool implementation, SYSPLEX implementation, Workload Manager (WLM) implementation, IBM MAGSTAR and SUTMYN ATL/VTL tape robotics acquisition, configuration and implementation, IBM 9393 (RVA) acquisition, configuration and installation, dynamic device activation/reconfiguration support implementation, and general system software upgrade planning, installation and maintenance.

Planned and executed OS/390 migration for twenty MVS images for the DOD Megacenter, including setting up their initial SYSPLEX configurations, their WLM performance controls and their SMS managed storage controls. Additionally, provided capacity planning support, performance analysis, and hardware configuration guidance.

The assignment involved the planning for and relocation of a large-scale data center. Issues included combining multiple mainframe systems on a single platform in multiple domains (LPARs), upgrading the DASD to RAID technology and implementing robotic tape handlers.

Evaluated the configurations of large multi-image MVS/ESA installations of various major corporations to make recommendations for system performance improvements.

Successfully completed the redesign and relocation of a large worldwide network for a major oil company. The project included the relocation of their central MVS/ESA data center consisting of multiple ES/9000 processors and associated peripherals, including the communications major hub hardware (3745's, 3172 TCP/IP - token ring controllers, 6098 CAD/CAM controllers, Timeplex TX-3s, CISCO routers, LINK-2s, and an assortment of concentrators, modems, satellite receivers, patch panels, voice communication gear, T-3 circuits, etc.; and the network operational control center, all with minimal disruption to the users. The network was comprised of a token ring WAN and associated LANs combined with a parallel SNA backbone and crossover gateways (SNA, LeeData, DecNet, etc.).

The assignment was as a key member of the transition team for a large commercial data center outsourcing contract consisting of IBM MVS/ESA, VM/ESA, VAX/VMS and SUN UNIX platforms. Primary responsibilities were for overall systems configuration (IOCP, MVSCP, LPAR setup) and software assurance, capacity planning and tuning, as well as "lights-out" operation planning and implementation. Additional projects included DFHSM set up and control, DFSMS implementation planning, interfacing MVS and VM operating system (RMF, SMF, MICS, BGS) and network (NETVIEW, RDM) utilization statistics with DEC and UNIX statistics to create a real-time enterprise wide metrics system, improving problem tracking and resolution (INFO/SYS), converting non-SMP/E packaged products to SMP/E format, and developing JES2 user exits for resource standards enforcement

Responsibilities included systems security evaluation and system penetration projects (ACF2, RACF), large system capacity planning and performance analysis and tuning (MICS, various BGS and system monitors), SNA network analysis and performance management (NETVIEW, NETMAN, NPM), and planning for major hardware/software upgrades at various sites, in addition to overall system programming and network support.

Projects included systems engineering and systems software support for configuration and installation of a new hardware facility consisting of multiple IBM 3090s running MVS/SP, VM/HPO and VS1. Modified VM/HPO dispatcher and scheduler and VS1 storage management to support 4K page environment. Concurrently, duties included design and implementation of a SNA multi-domain network to inter-link the IBM 3090s, an IBM 4341 and the TELOPS telemetry system. Developed code to interface the TELOPS telemetry system to new hardware and telemetry software. Investigated futures of large IBM compatible storage systems for NASA.Miscellaneous. Other projects have included general systems programming and related subsystems support; MVS(ESA, XA) system generation (IOCP, MVSCP) and maintenance (SMP/E), system tuning (SRM, I/O) using RMFMON, OMEGAMON and TMON monitors, applications analysis and tuning, design and develop operating system exits ( JES2, scheduler, allocation ), program product exits, feasibility studies, MVS/XA to MVS/ESA conversion planning, capacity planning, and proposal support.

Responsible for the installation, maintenance and tuning of IBM operating systems (MVS/JES2) , telecommunications software ( ACF/NCP, NDM, TPNS, etc.), and DB/DC software (CICS, IDMS/R, DB2, ADABAS) on IBM 3084Q, 3081K and 4341 processors at a large service bureau.; areas of responsibility include DASD management, customer support, capacity planning, configuration management, and program product support (200+). Initiated the organization's first user support group with a dedicated technical staff for initial customer interface including second and third level support and implemented an online problem tracking system. Managed 6 systems programmers in the performance of their duties.Project duties included cultivation and coordination of new customer projects across all phases of negotiation, design, and implementation as they affect CSC IBM services. Consultant to systems programming staff on tasks related to MVS/XA and JES2 problems; i.e. system tuning and performance, telecommunications, product installation and customization of both hardware/software upgrades and system troubleshooting. Provided long range system planning and technical guidance to the director CSC IBM Services Division. Produced initial planning documents for MVS/XA to MVS/ESA conversion.

Computer Systems Specialist - Primary area of responsibility was operating systems (MVS/JES2, VM/370, OS/VS1) maintenance and tuning (SMP, SRM, SYSGENs) , including communications (VTAM/NCP, SDLC, LANS) , job entry systems (JES, RJE/NJE), and diagnostics and recovery functions (IPCS, etc).; duties included system programmer education, operator training, planning for future system requirements and establishing system policies and procedures. Developed user exits to provide required functions to the operating system and to enforce installation policy.Sr. Computer Scientist - Responsible for the technical aspects of the VM/370, OS/VS1 systems programming effort for the Telemetry On-line Processing System (TELOPS) project at NASA. Additionally, was instrumental in the installation of the NASA Data Explorer project IBM 4341 using VM/SP, OS/VS1 and 3705 VTAM/NCP and its later conversion to MVS/JES2.

Responsible for MVS/JES2 operating systems software on AMDAHL hardware. Provided on-site diagnostic support and general maintenance and generation support to customer systems programming staffs. Additionally customer base included OS/MVT and VM/370 systems support requirements. Acted as AMDAHL's regional JES2 specialist, providing support to other AMDAHL System engineers in region. Also aided AMDAHL hardware representatives in the maintenance and installation of AMDAHL mainframes.

Directed five system programmers in the maintenance and modification of the OS/VS1 and VM/370 operating system internals on two IBM 370/145 mainframes. Responsibilities included scheduling and planning work assignments and providing technical direction to systems and applications programmers. Was responsible for the implementation of VM/370 and generated modifications to CP to support the direct control feature between two VM/370 systems. Additionally, modifications were made to the OS/VS1 shadow paging algorithms to support real-time applications under VM/370. While with CSTA became intimately familiar with 3850 MSS problem determination and recovery techniques.

Responsible for the maintenance and enhancement of MVS/JES2 on IBM 370 168/158 computers. Other responsibilities included TCAM/TSO internals and networking systems and all communication systems troubleshooting. In other assignments maintained and modified OS/MVS/HASP operating system software and modified the internals of an OS based DOS emulator to support an on-line airline scheduling system. Additionally, implemented and maintained a CICS/ATMS network for NASA, which required modification of the CICS communication drivers to support dial-up 3275 terminals. This code was adopted by IBM for inclusion in later releases. At other sites modified SVS operating systems and evaluated software products and systems.
