My research involves the evolutionary significance of pentamerism (5 petals) in plants. As angiosperms diversified, there was a reduction in petal number, and the tendency was to fix on five petals throughout many lineages. I am trying to elucidate whether this fixation is the result of adaptation, presumably in response to pollinators, or whether it represents an evolutionary constraint.
