About Mieke Kox
I am currently working as an Assistant Professor at the Law, Society and Crime department of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. I conduct (mainly qualitative) research on unauthorized migrants, migration controls, immigration detention, transnational prisons and related topics. Furthermore, I am teaching (advanced) qualitative research skills and migration courses and coordinating the skills curriculum of the Bachelor of Criminology. I am a member of the Faculty council, the editorial board of Crimmigratie & Recht and co-chair of the Working Group 'Criminology of Mobility' of the European Society of Criminology. Previously, I worked as a postdoc for Utrecht University, for a NGO, IO and Advisory Committee of the Dutch government on migration-related topics.

Involved in criminological and socio-legal research on unauthorized migrants' everyday lives and their experiences with the immigration system, the everyday experiences of refugees, transnational prisons and others. Drawing upon concepts such as legal consciousness, legitimacy, deportabilty and many others. Postdoc Researcher Human Geography And Planology
I am a postdoc in the project 'The everyday experiences of young refugees and asylum seekers in public spaces' that is funded by HERA. In this collaborative research, I explore - together with our project partners - issues of refugee youth, public space and integration in Europe and more particular in Amsterdam, Brussels, Newcastle and Leipzig. I am mainly responsible for the case of Amsterdam. This involves participatory research at BOOST Amsterdam. Phd Candidate Criminology Department,
My PhD project focuses on how migration control matters to unauthorized migrants. On the basis of ethnographic fieldwork amonst 105 unauthorized migrants in the Netherlands, Surinam and Nigeria, I illustrate how unauthorized migrants understand migration control and how these controls impact their everyday lives. Furthermore, I show to what extent these migrants consider these controls legitimate and how this influences what they think and do. Finally, I address the question how the subjection to migration control impacts unauthorized migrants' future. Next to my PhD project, I have been involved in a research project on the transnational prison in Veenhuizen (the Netherlands) where Norwegian prisoners used to be imprisoned and an evaluation project of an Assisted Voluntary Return Project. Furthermore, I have taught several skills courses, given guest lectures and been the chair of PILAR, the PhD in Law Association Rotterdam.
