As an Inmate Systems Officer, I am the inmate’s initial contact with the Federal Prison System. I work with the inmates in an effective and firm, but fair manner. When processing inmates in and out of the institution, I properly identify the inmates and escorting officials, conduct strip searches, make fingerprints, take photographs, inventory all personal property, prepare identification cards, and update inmate logs on the SENTRY system. I separate inmates that may be involved in an adverse situation with the other inmates. Because I am Central Inmate Monitoring Systems (CIMS) qualified, I assist the Unit Team staff with their interviews. I stay abreast of all new procedures affecting writs of habeas corpus, removal or extradition to other jurisdictions and am in continuous contact with other governmental representatives. Additionally, I coordinate legal exchanges of custody with Federal and non-Federal inmates, which allows me to maintain close working relationships with U.S. Marshal Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Postal Inspector, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Parole Commission, California Department of Corrections, and local law enforcement officers. While assigned to the Inmate Systems Department, I am accountable for the prevention of contraband introduction by visual inspections, physical pat and strip searches, the utilization of the BOSS chair (full body metal detector) and x-ray machine. Identification, safeguarding and distribution of inmate personal property, along with cash monies and negotiable instruments, records maintenance, security and control of records are among my other responsibilities. When I work in the mail room I sort, screen, open and inspect all incoming and outgoing mail. I am knowledgeable in the area of letter contraband detection. I maintain logs pertinent to all accountable mail services and special mail.

While assigned to the Special Investigative Section (SIS), I have had an effective working relationship with many Law Enforcement agencies and other Bureau of Prison facilities. I would communicate daily with Law Enforcement agencies such as Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Immigration and Nationalization Service (INS), California Department of Corrections (CDC), as well as many police and sheriff departments. While assigned as an Intelligence Officer, I was responsible for the production of written documents and reports that concerned all aspects of the daily institutional operations that occurred during my shift. I also prepared Security Threat Group packets, validation packets, and conducted protective custody investigations. This documentation required the ability to draft precise and comprehensive overviews of critical situations, noted incidents, deviations, or deficiencies that might have been identified during my shift
