Miguel de Vega (Mig for short) is a mathematician and passionate innovator. Miguel is the Chief Scientist at Nillion (https://nillion.com) and inventor of its new cryptographic primitive Nil Message Compute (NMC). A large part of Miguel’s professional life has been dedicated to making computation and data truly decentralized. He has been innovating blockchain and distributed technologies, cryptography and deep learning since 2008. He has filed more than 30 patents in his career, with 7 of those patents still being used to optimize the flow of information on high-volume fiber optic cables today (such as the Trans-Atlantic Cable). He has created mathematical models for various types of networks, including mobile, wireless, ad-hoc, satellite and optical fiber networks for large IT companies, designed domain-specific languages for banks, and machine learning algorithms and cryptographic protocols for several startups.Miguel holds a PhD in Mathematics from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, as well as a Masters in Engineering from the Madrid Polytechnic University where he graduated with two majors. Miguel is also a cryptography advisor at Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), the world’s oldest and the UK’s leading defence and security think tank.He enjoys water- and winter sports, classical music and science fiction.

NMC represents a generational leap in Secure Multi-Party Computation (SMPC/MPC) which allows nodes in a decentralized network to work in a permissionless, non-blockchain, non-traditional SMPC, way. Unlike blockchain, network nodes do not run immutable ledgers designed to store transaction data. Unlike SMPC, nodes do not have to communicate with one another. Nillion therefore intends to become the first fully decentralized, trustless, and permissionless Nil Message Compute network for web3. It will act as a public utility providing fast (near client-server speed), secure (post-quantum), private (Information-Theoretic Secure), chain-agnostic (universally available base layer infrastructure), and leaderless (fully decentralized) processing, with the objective of both enhancing existing blockchains and offering native network services with unique properties. -

This technology is based on zero-knowledge proofs (ZKP) and secure multi-party computations (SMPC). ZKP allows one party to prove claims based on their data to another party without disclosing the data. SMPC enables two or more parties to collaboratively execute an algorithm that consumes private inputs from each party without any party having to disclose their data to the other parties. Products: (1) Kagii: advanced multi-factor authentication using ZKP so that sensitive information such as passwords never leave the device. (2) KYC Expert: high-assurance identity verification and KYC/AML-compliant customer onboarding flows using AI-powered biometrics and ZKP to compare identity attributes against authoritative sources without disclosing them. For example, Sedicii is collaborating with the UK Government on a pilot to validate UK passport data against HMPO records. (3) Prexa: AML solution, which enables multiple financial institutions collaborate using SMPC in a privacy-preserving manner in the fight against financial crime. (4) Priva: ZKP applied to blockchain technologies, providing transaction anonymity while ensuring trusted identities link to blockchain addresses. The resulting blockchain supports judiciary oversight to trace pseudonymous transactions. As the CTO I work with a small (around 10) team of developers doing research, prototyping and building products based in AI and advanced cryptography in the context of distributed ledger technologies and digital identity management processes. -
