I am an Australian software developer currently living in Turku, Finland. My passion is solving peoples' problems in a way that makes their job easier, rather than adding more complexity.My commercial experience started off developing data collection and processing software for breast cancer research for NewtonGreen Technologies in Newcastle, Australia. A move to Finland became necessary so this led to a job at Hotellinx Systems Ltd to develop largely Windows software for the hotel and restaurant sector. As the sole developer using technologies beyond VB6 I was involved in all stages of development for various products, including moving the whole database from MS Access to SQL Server.From then, I have moved on to Rediteq Oy, a company making education management software. Very soon after starting I was given responsibility for the re-design of a product that had been rejected by the customer (Prakticum in Helsinki) who commissioned it. The end result received great praise and has become a spearhead product for the company to break into new sectors of education.At Rediteq I have risen to the role of Lead Developer, taking greater responsibility in the design decisions and more direct involvement with the customers to be able to design better software. This is in addition to taking on a mentoring role with regard to front-end design for the other developers.On the education front, I have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the University of Newcastle, Australia, and I completed a Master's degree in Science (Software Engineering) from Åbo Akademi in Turku, Finland. My thesis was in the field of computational biomodelling (another term is systems biology), which was completely unrelated to any work I am likely to ever do. However, the experience of working on a large piece of research, with several collaborators, was incredible. It expanded my ability to find information, create models of systems, and also to sit for long periods of time and just think things through.For the future, I am looking for any position which allows me to continue learning new skills and extend those I've already gathered. The field could be anything, the goal is always identifying the problems that most need solving and providing novel solutions to excited customers.
