In addition to my studies and employment at the University of Helsinki, I'm also the primary IT person at Vexlum Ltd., and therefore responsible for developing and maintaining their IT systems. As Vexlum moved to its new premises, I collaborated with contractors to setup networking for the building and to upgrade the servers to improve their performance.

Vexlum is a spin-off company from the Optoelectronics Research Centre of Tampere University, and it manufactures semiconductor disk lasers for specific and demanding applications such as astronomy and quantum technology. My primary responsibility there was the characterization and quality control of the laser gain mirrors. The work was tightly integrated.

This employment is related to my master's thesis on phase transitions in the early universeI have been working on the Python-based simulation software PTtools to implement additional features and to publish it as an open source library, making it available for other researchers as well.

In this summer employment I was tasked with improving the performance and code quality of a Python-based simulation software for phase transitions in the early universe. I was able to improve the performance of the simulations by more than 5x by parallelising the critical parts with Numba. The code is now conformant to the Python style guidelines and other.

I worked in the semiconductor disk laser (VECSEL) team. My work consisted primarily of laser measurements and quality control, but also included programming and various forms of engineering. The article doi:10.1364/OPTICA.3.001294 provides an example of the lasers we developed.
