Mikayla Bordador is a third-year at the University of California, Berkeley, working towards B.A.'s in a triple major in Human Integrative Biology, Public Health (Infectious Disease) and Music. Her passions for music, medicine, and advocacy have put her in leadership positions in various student-run organizations and volunteer settings. She hopes to pursue neonatology in the future through an MD/PhD program and activism, as well as research on the interaction of artificial intelligence and human capital as an enabler for medical processes that assist patients in the NICU, and the regionalization of neonatal care, changes in parent-infant relationships, and technology advancements like phototherapy, oxygen saturation monitoring, and brain imaging procedures to ensure that patients receive the best possible treatment during their time of need. She hopes to continue broadening her medical expertise in areas outside the interested clinical concentration while enacting tangible change within her community.Tripling in such differing fields bridges a combination of her love for the sciences, fascination with the constantly changing human body, and passion for expression through music. She strives to be a well-rounded individual, and especially when it comes down to pursuing a passion, a multifaceted mindset is necessary. With healthcare, she not only wants to be able to treat patients, but be able to form trusting relationships and empathize with them. Through pursuing music since the age of four, she has developed the grit and work ethic necessary to succeed in medicine, the ability to be aware of others’ emotional states as musicians have to be able to understand and relay the composer’s messages through their own interpretation which translates with being able to connect with patients, and among other things, experience with teamwork through being apart of different musical ensembles, all while learning how to balance a collaborative which will bode well in working with diverse medical teams in order to foster patients’ healthcare needs.
