They say, “When it is something you are passionate about, you never work a day in your life.” I am a researcher. This is never the route I envisioned for myself, in fact, I never liked science or math at all. Or so I thought. When I began pursuing my career, my love for research started as a mere curiosity and blossomed into a passion. One day my professor stated, “Your passion is not math, science, or even research, it's your passion for people, and for justice, that drives your research.” And this changed the way I viewed what I did. Following my passions I began my project the Minority Health Initiative, and founded my organization Crowns Without Boundaries. I began to volunteer in several capacities, namely as a gratitude specialist for TWST4 Girls, and on PVAMU's campus with Deeds Not Words. I have had the opportunity to serve in several leadership roles as a Behavioral Health Technician, Substitute Teacher for CY-Fair ISD, President and Founder of an organization working to provide opportunities to marginalized communities within the pageant world, and as a research assistant with a focus on trauma in the Black community. I was selected this year as a NAMIcon presenter out of over 800 applications for my project "The Things we don't know we don't know, shining a light on childhood trauma."I have spent these years learning, watching, and advocating as a voice for children who have experienced trauma. I am a researcher and an advocate, and though I was never particularly fond of math or science, I am fond of people, justice, and change.
