During my time at Banfield, I had the opportunity to practice technical skills under the guidance of clinic staff. I observed weekly surgical procedures and performed anesthetic monitoring in preparation for third year surgery. Throughout the program, I discussed patient cases with clinicians and other veterinary students working at Banfield Hospitals in the area.

As a seasonal veterinary assistant, I worked closely with veterinarians and veterinary technicians to deliver efficient and beneficial animal care. This included facilitating the daily operation of clinic procedures with tasks such as taking patient histories, generating invoices, and communicating with clients. In this position, I utilized daily knowledge of vaccination, pre/post-surgical care, euthanasia, routine examination, and emergency protocols.

My research in the Croney Lab studied the behavior and overall welfare of dogs, particularly in shelters and breeding facilities. Physical and behavioral health are equally important contributors to canine welfare and the success they experience as human companions. In comparison to the evaluation of physical metrics, behavioral evaluation is more challenging to approach objectively. The Croney Lab has developed the FIDO (Field Instantaneous Dog Observation) tool to reliably, validly, and instantaneously assess canine behavior as it relates to welfare. I contributed to the further study and development of this tool as well as to the construction of a canine ethogram video during my time at the lab.

As a seasonal employee, I assisted in the everyday operations of a small animal veterinary clinic. This included post-surgical patient recovery, overseeing daily upkeep of the facility (cleaning, stocking, etc.), and assistance with routine patient examinations. I also used this time to develop a foundation of technical skills, including radiograph and ultrasound assistance, venipuncture, and restraint techniques.

As a seasonal worker in the Brickie Youth Tennis program, I helped introduce children to the game of tennis. While providing a fun and positive environment for kids from the ages of 5 to 15, I also taught proper techniques and provided guidance while they continued to develop within each skill level. This job contributed to my own development of patience, leadership, and the ability to follow orders and communicate ideas.

This experience gave me the opportunity to observe the everyday practices of a small animal veterinarian, including surgeries, examinations, diagnostics, and associated treatment plans. My time as an intern significantly solidified my commitment to the veterinary profession.
