Approached by two leadership members and asked if I was interested in managing the CNX team. The CNX team suffered from low trust and low performance but also had an extensive overhaul of the legacy system it needed to complete. I answered the call, joined the team, and rebranded the name to Content Engineering. Through pair programming, "swarming," continuous improvement, and the lean philosophy, we built up trust again and improved performance. Lead times were reduced from 21 days to 7 days within the first 2 months. The legacy transition was tackled as a "verticle slice," and we innovated initially on all the areas of high risk. Ultimately, we finished the migration ahead of schedule and removed an unprecedented amount of infrastructure burden. Today, the team is like a high-performing Ferrari. We are more concerned with improving performance by tweaking air-to-fuel ratios rather than where to put the gas pedal.

I realized that to make the changes I wanted as a developer, I would need to move into a management position to gain more influence. The QA Manager position, coupled with the strong reputation I built as a developer, allowed me to successfully transform the quality culture. QA at OpenStax developed organically from customer service and did not have a strong voice in the organization. I borrowed practices from Microsoft and Unity to create a Constantly Improving Quality Model (CIQM). The CIQM allowed QA Analysts to measure, track, and improve the quality culture on their teams. For example, before I started as QA Manager, no teams had well-defined acceptance criteria on cards.Additionally, the automated regression testing that existed was defunct and unmaintained. I built test frameworks to cover each product using pytest and Selenium. I mentored QA Analysts in Python and worked with the Product Manager of each product to dedicate time for developers to help maintain the tests.

Full stack developer for the research team. The research team consisted of Cognitive Psychology and ML PhDs/Postdocs researching student learning. Developed and implemented learning experiments using Python/Flask, NumPy, sci-kit-learn, pandas, etc., with integrations to Amazon's Mechanical Turk. Wrote eGrader app allowing SMEs to grade free-form responses; implemented a random forest algorithm to prioritize the "best" answers to grade. Integrated Hypothesis annotation software into OpenStax Tutor as part of a $1M NSF grant and built BigLearn SPARFA, which powered OpenStax Tutor's personalized learning features. Recognized on multiple occasions for delivering high-quality software on time with tight deadlines.

Executed daily, weekly, and quarterly maintenance checks on the Aegis missile defense hardware and software. Created detailed reports of errors and implemented maintenance plans and repairs. The Aegis system consisted of 26+ various LANs, including a token ring network. Learned the true meaning of teamwork and "owning" one's systems.
