I qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1986, and following a clinical career in anaesthetic nursing both in the UK and Europe, entered nurse education in 1991 where I have remained ever since. My career expertise in perioperative nursing has both informed and influenced my research interests, leading to publication in the British Journal of Nursing on the subject of the importance of a nursing presence in the operating theatre; this in turn was augmented by my undergraduate work on preparing student nurses to work in postoperative recovery areas, for which I was awarded the inaugural Blair Collister Memorial Prize for best academic dissertation by the Victoria University of Manchester.My postgraduate thesis on the effects of student nurses returning to clinical placements in the operating theatre after its recognition as a valuable learning area continued my research in this domain, and I have presented papers in cities across the world over the past 10 years, including Paris, Berlin, Heraklion and Vancouver.Over the past decade I have become increasingly more involved in international nursing, including the using of the online communication medium SKYPE to facilitate contact and shared learning between pre-registration students and their peers who remain in the UK, and also the promotion of pre-registration student nurse mobility to worldwide international clinical placements, as well as the development of high fidelity patient simulation as a contemporary teaching and learning methodology.One of my final roles within the School involved academic and professional clinical input into the high fidelity patient simulation agenda, utilising blended technologically-based teaching and learning methodologies to assist in the development and establishment of students' clinical skills and awareness through the media of simulation and debrief. I was also heavily involved in the admissions process of recruiting new students into the school using online and face to face interviewing techniques. I retired from the university in May 2022, and in November 2023 qualified as a simulator flight instructor on the Boeing 737-800NG aircraft. I now work as a self-employed, freelance Flight Instructor and shareholder at Runway Flight Simulators in Stockport on fixed-base 737 simulators and am working towards the same qualification on the Airbus A320 aircraft.
